Philosophy

Buildings that make the day feel slower.

We are a studio of eleven in Nordhavn, Copenhagen. We design houses, small public buildings and interiors, and we keep the number of projects low enough that a partner draws every one.

Light before form

We start with where the sun falls at 8am and 4pm, then let the walls follow.

Few materials, honestly used

Oak, lime plaster, brick and glass. Each is left to age in view.

Built to be repaired

Joints you can reach, finishes you can renew, details a local carpenter can mend.

Selected work

Four houses, one patient method.

Hospitality

A warm living and dining space with a timber lattice screen and plants

A calm grey living room with a low sofa, shelving and a large window

A bedroom with oak panelling, a backlit mirror and marble flooring

Interiors

Rooms drawn with the walls, not after them.

Our interiors team works inside the architecture from day one, so joinery, light and furniture belong to the same idea. Most rooms use fewer than five materials, and nearly everything is made within 200 km of site.

Talk about an interior

Founding partner Mads Holm at his desk, working on a timber site model

The studio

Eleven people, one long table.

Mads Holm founded Atelier Oak in 2004 after a decade building houses with his hands in Jutland. He still builds a physical model of every project before a single drawing is issued.

Today the studio is nine architects, two interior designers and one model maker. We eat lunch together at the same table, and every project is reviewed there on Thursdays.
